Sierra Leoneโ€™s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, participated in the World Menstrual Hygiene Day celebrations through a well-attended Zoom meeting that included members from across the country and globally.

The event was also broadcast live on Her Excellency’s Facebook page, ensuring wider reach and engagement.

The celebration aimed to address the challenges and taboos surrounding menstrual health management, promoting the dignity and awareness of menstrual hygiene. Her Excellency emphasised the importance of breaking the silence around menstruation and eliminating the stigma associated with it. She highlighted that menstruation is a natural process affecting half of the worldโ€™s population and should not be a source of shame or embarrassment.

Dr. Fatima Maada Bio also allowed school-going girls to add their voices by making positive contributions, encouraging open dialogue, and fostering a supportive community. She shared her personal experiences and encouraged women to speak openly about their menstrual cycles. As a mother, you should not be ashamed of educating your daughter about the menstrual cycle, she said.

She ended by saying thank you and also saying, โ€œLet us come together to improve the lives of women and girls, ensuring that menstrual health is recognised as an essential part of health and human rights.โ€
