First Lady’s from Africa, Diplomats and Top government functionaries converged in Abuja on the22nd of November 2021 for the 9th General Assembly of the African First Ladies Peace Mission. As a powerful and influential group, the First Ladies unanimously selected Her Excellency Dr. Aisha Buhari as the new President of the Mission. Dr. Aisha Buhari in a statement said “our involvement in this African project will be guided by the AU’s agenda”, First Lady Akofu Addo of Ghana reiterated ” This meeting comes at an opportune time, and underscores the need to generate ideas on the best ways to assist in mitigating conflicts and enhancing peace , security and the well being of all. First Lady Bio in her statement said “The war in Sierra Leone would not have been won without Nigeria.
When we are together we are stronger”. Nigeria’s President said development is truncated if Africa does not have peace. First Ladies advancing peace, will lead to development. President Buhari said his government is committed to the resolution of the assembly and urged other African countries to do the same.
President Buhari went on to congratulate the First Lady for acquiring a piece of land on behalf of all First Ladies for the development of a secretariat for the Mission in Abuja. First Lady Buhari in her acceptance speech pledged to execute her new responsibility with total commitment, urging her colleagues to work in unison towards a glorious destiny for Africa. ”My dear colleagues as we conclude this Summit, let history guide us to ensure that the Africa we bequeath to our children today is better than the one we inherited … Let us commit ourselves to work together towards achieving a glorious destiny for all Africans,” she said.
The First Ladies and dignitaries proceeded to the location of the proposed secretariat building for the tuning of the sod ceremony. There they were joined by the founder of the AFLPM, former First Lady Mrs Abacha.
Later in the evening they held a fund raising dinner and monies were pledged by various donors for the project.
